Paperboy for Windows 1.90 Description Paperboy is a Windows based offline newsreader, compatible with the SOUP message format. Version 1.90 is a "beta" test version, released in the hopes of soliciting bug reports and comments. Distribution Version 1.90 is intended only for experienced users of offline readers. A later release will have documentation, suitable for less adventurous folks. License Paperboy is protected under the GNU General Public License, version 2 or later. See the file COPYING for details. Author Paperboy was written by Michael H. Vartanian (vart@eniac.seas.upenn.edu) using Microsoft's Visual Basic 3.0 and Visual C++ 1.0. Requirements Paperboy runs under Microsoft Windows, on a 386 or greater processor. It requires the file VBRUN300.DLL, which is freely available, and often already present. Location PBOY190.ZIP is available at the following FTP sites: ftp.gte.com (/pub/incoming for now.) ftp.cica.indiana.edu (/pub/pc/win3/uploads for now.) More sites will be added when Paperboy stabilizes. Manifest README (This file) COPYING GNU General Public License PAPERBOY.EXE The PAPERBOY program PBOYSOUP.DLL Support library CMDIALOG.VBX Microsoft Common Dialog Box Support SAMPLE.ZIP Sample feed, useful for verifying proper installation SOURCE.ZIP Source code Installation After unzipping the archive, copy the CMDIALOG.VBX file to your \WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory, checking first that you don't have a later version already installed. Unzip SAMPLE.ZIP. Several files (AREAS, INFO, *.MSG) should be created. From Windows, run PAPERBOY.EXE. From the "File" menu, select "Open Areas...", and select the previously created AREAS file. Or from DOS, just type PAPERBOY [full path of AREAS file]. Using Paperboy After exploring the sample newsfeed, try accessing a SOUP packet generated on your host system. Replies are made up of a REPLIES file, and several PBR###.MSG files, all of which are fed into the packet processor on the host system. The interface should be pretty straightforward. For quickly navigating messages, the spacebar scrolls down, and pressing "n" will skip to the next message. Reporting bugs If Paperboy behaves unexpectedly, please let me know! Serious crashes may result in a \PBFAULT.LOG file being dumped, this file contains useful information on the internal state of Paperboy leading up to the crash. Known problems/limitations Poor threading of messages No external editor Few keyboard shortcuts Slow, fat DLL (debugging code) Poor documentation/online help Only tested with uqwk 1.8 Doesn't keep mail between sessions Not totally SOUP 1.2 compliant Doesn't handle MIME -Michael Vartanian (vart@eniac.seas.upenn.edu)
